SPEECH THERAPY

Speech therapy helps individuals feel more confident and less frustrated about speaking to others. People who have language issues can benefit socially, emotionally, and academically from speech therapy.

Why Speech Therapy?

The three most basic human processes begin at birth: breathing, communicating, and eating. A baby is born, takes the first breath of air, cries to communicate, and immediately wants to eat.  These three processes are carried throughout a person’s lifespan. At Lighthouse, speech-language pathologists use a collaborative approach to diagnose and treat disorders with breathing, feeding, swallowing, and communication across all ages. Many patients are referred by a doctor, while others seek therapy themselves. Your speech pathologist will collaborate with you and a team of other medical professionals when necessary to customize an individualized speech therapy plan for your loved one.

Pediatric Speech Therapy

Pediatric speech therapy focuses on assessment and treatment of disorders and delays that affect infants, children, and adolescents. We work closely with children, their families and caregivers to improve your child’s ability to function independently at home and within the community.

Adult Speech Therapy

Specialties of our SLP team

Lighthouse has assembled a highly skilled team of SLP’s who possess additional certifications and continue to add to their skill base through quality continuing education courses.

  • Orofacial Myology

Lighthouse SLPs are on the certification track with the  IAOM. Our SLP’s have over 150 combined hours in continuing education courses in orofacial myology.

  • Feeding Program

We use a sensory-motor based approach for feeding disorders.  Feeding disorders can often have underlying sensory and/or motor issues that negatively impact the child’s ability to be a good eater. Our OTs and SLPs work together to make sure all underlying issues are met in our feeding program.

  • Swallowing

Our SLPs have additional continuing education hours to treat both adult and pediatric swallowing disorders.  Oral phase swallowing disorders are often diagnosed at the initial evaluation.  We will refer for MBSS studies when appropriate and work collaboratively with these referrals to gather all the appropriate information to diagnose and treat swallowing disorders in the pharyngeal phase of the swallow.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Sleep disorders can affect both pediatrics and adults.  Children with OSA often have behavioral problems, hyperactivity, learning problems, perform poorly in school, and can have poor weight gain.  Adults with OSA can experience cognitive decline, irritability, high blood pressure, or even death.

Our Lighthouse SLPs work collaboratively with ENTs, orthodontists, and dentists to treat the muscles of the soft palate and tongue that often are involved in OSA.

"We loved our experience at Lighthouse Therapy. My son received speech therapy services here for about 5 years. Each therapist we worked with was compassionate and always provided top of the notch services. Everyone who helped us went above and beyond to help my son feel confident, and were always professional. I would highly recommend using them for speech therapy."
